BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club Men’s first team secured their first league win of the season with a 4-0 win at home to Barnes, writes SARAH LUCAS.

The home side's opening goal came after Danny Bowden, after he broke up a strong Barnes attack and delivered a long ball up to Dean Record, who set-up Dave Stones for a simple tap in.

Graham Garrett-Lang with a drag flick from a short corner made it 2-0 at half time.

After the break, Record scored with a reverse stick flick, prior to Ben Jubin finishing off the scoring after good work from Paul Dowers.

The Ladies first team got back to winning ways with a 5-2 win at home, against London Wayfarers, to move up to fourth in the table.

Basingstoke scored early, as a through ball from Steph Hazell to captain Catriona Bausor, she drew the defence and slipped the ball to Fiona Parker to slot home.

Claire Bowman scored Basingstoke’s second from the penalty spot, before the Wayfarers pulled a goal back.

Bausor set an example and slotted home after some great individual skill as the Ladies led 3-2 at half-time.

Basingstoke increased their lead, as captain Bausor, who won the ball on the half way line and attacked with pace, passing to Annalise Whitehead to round the goalie.

The final goal came from another Bowman penalty flick, before a debut goal from Clare Griffiths was unfortunately ruled out.

Elsewhere in the men’s section, the seconds drew 1-1 away at Bournemouth after Jacques Lourens had given them an early lead.

The thirds came away 2-1 victors from Southampton University. Southampton scored first in the second half before replies from James Warman, before Clinton Douglass scored with a deflection from a firmly struck pass from Ian Watson.

The fourth team maintained their momentum with a 3-1 win at home to Fareham, with Harry Cave scoring in the first half. Early in the second half, Fareham equalised, but Basingstoke replied through a debut goal for club coach Ryan Casson, before Christian Bowman netted their third.

The fifths and Vikings battled out a 0-0 draw in their first of two games against each other this season due to being in the same league.

In the remainder of the ladies section, the second team hosted Yateley and went 1-0 up in the first half due to a well-executed short corner strike from Sarah Mainprise-Tait.

Yateley equalised early in the second half, before scoring three times in four minutes to win 4-1.

The thirds had a much stronger performance despite a 2-1 loss against a well-drilled Fareham side.

Coach Kerry Barker back to manage a changed team, saw them score first with a cross inside the circle from Nicky Dowds being deflected in by a defender.

Basingstoke continued to press and had a number of chances, before scored twice to take the points.

The fourth team continued their unbeaten run with an 8-1 victory against Hamble.

Basingstoke were 3-0 up at half time thanks to the opener from Sue Pett and a brace from Gemma Applegarth. Hamble scored early in the second half, but the ladies increased their lead thanks to goals from Jo Gault, an amazing strike from Sophie Slemeck, Olivia Wade, Sharon Holden and another for leading club goalscorer Pett to maintain the their lead at the top of division five.

Lastly, the fifths travelled to Yateley and won thanks to a debut Basingstoke goal from Beth Dann.
