BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club Ladies kicked off their pre-season in earnest with victory at a triangular tournament at Down Grange last Sunday.

First up for the home side were Fareham, who finished a strong third behind South 3B winners Basingstoke last season.

The home side had more possession from the start as they ran out 4-1 winners over the two shortened half periods.

They then despatched a tiring Henley from South 3A 6-0 in the last fixture of the day.

Fiona Parker netted a hat-trick in both games with captain Catriona Bausor, forward Claire Bowman, and new recruit Clare Griffiths also on the scoresheet.

The ladies face Guildford on Saturday (1.30pm) at Down Grange in advance of their opening South Division Two fixture away to Spencer on September 17, which will be the first real test.

The ladies fifth team play Camberley at home on Saturday (10.15am), while the men’s first and second team squads travel to Ashford as the pre-season continues.

On Saturday, 200 players new and old, young and not so young, enjoyed the club’s Season Opener.

“It’s a great lead in to the season” said vice chairman Ruth Crawford “We were delighted to host Olympic Gold medallist Maddie Hinch a few weeks back and it’s definitely created an extra buzz.

“We’re putting on extra sessions for the influx of enquiries from returning players and total beginners, who perhaps aren’t ready or don’t want to play formal league hockey.

“It’s a great issue to have, and we look forward to announcing more social and friendly games and coaching sessions in the coming weeks as we continue to grow the club.”
