BASINGSTOKE enjoyed a hat-trick of success at the annual Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sports Awards at Southampton Football Club.

The three winners were Simone Williams (Junior Volunteer), Sharks Disability Swimming (Junior Team) and Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy (London 2012 Legacy Award).

The event was presented by Kris Temple from BBC South Today, with Olympic Bronze medallist James Foad was the special guest.

Williams a key member of the Oakley Girls under-16 team and also carries out weekly duties as an assistant referee for the under-13s and recently completed her refereeing badges.

Williams said: “It was a complete surprise, I didn’t expect it. I referee junior matches and I’m also a linesman for my brother's team. I also play as well. I really enjoy it and wish to give back for 10 years of playing.

“I look up to Kelly Smith, she’s always been an amazing player. This is amazing! I have my family here today, they’re all football fanatics and they really help me to get around and do what I love.”

The Sharks Disability Squad caters for swimmers with a wide range of abilities.

Their growing competition squad attended 11 competitions in 2015 and they are now an established accredited member of Special Olympics GB. Five swimmers attended the 2015 British Learning Disability Championships.

Clare Kelly lead coach of the Sharks Disability Swimming said: “It feels absolutely fantastic to win. It’s an amazing achievement for all the swimmers and amazing to see them being recognised."

They’ve put in so much effort, it makes it all worthwhile and the kids love the recognition The special London Legacy 2012 Award went to the Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts for their work with Dove House School Academy.

Shin Gi Tai co-owner Bryan Andrews said: “We’re really pleased as a club to win. The Dove House Judo club is the first for Hampshire. The first special needs club in the county. It’s great for those who are unsporty and those who are not good at team sports.

“It’s great to have the opportunity to celebrate local success. For the younger kids, seeing the competitors gives them a chance to see what they can achieve.”

Also shortlisted for county awards from Basingstoke were Danielle Harrison (Junior Sportswoman), Leanne Ganney (Senior Sportswoman), Zoe Sadler (Master Sportsperson), Basingstoke Hockey Club Ladies second team (Senior Team), Dean Crossley (Official), Basingstoke Gymnastics Club (Club) and Anil Patel (Junior Volunteer).
