CATRIONA Bausor's hat-trick helped the Basingstoke Hockey Ladies beat Surbiton 4-2, which keeps them top of the league, with one match left to play at home to Eastbourne on Saturday (11.45 am).

Both teams started strongly, Basingstoke's Annalise Whitehead hit the goalkeeper's pads and then the crossbar with two reverse stick shots.

Surbiton responded with a hit from the edge of the D that put them 1-0 ahead.

A drive by Rachael Bomphrey won a short corner, but Claire Bowman’s hit went wide. Steph Hazell and Tanya Finch made some crucial tackles and interceptions to prevent Surbiton advancing up the pitch and played the ball forward to Jo Bowden, Mel Trevaskis and Roxy O'Dea.

Basingstoke equalised as O'Dea played the ball through to Catriona Bausor, who found the bottom corner to equalise.

Whitehead then drove the ball into the D to win a short corner, which Bowman dragged in for Bausor to deflect home to make it 2-1 at half time.

In the second half, Basingstoke continued to apply pressure, winning a number of short corners. The first saw Bausor completed her hat-trick with a powerful shot into the back of the goal. In the second short corner, Bausor found Bowman to make it 4-1 When Surbiton responded with an attack, Cath McCormick made a diving interception to stop the ball reaching a high forward, but the Surrey side did pull a goal back, but Basingstoke won 4-2 Against the run of play, Surbiton won a short corner and one of the Basingstoke players broke early and was sent to the halfway line. The ball was sent in and just squeezed underneath goalkeeper Gemma Carswell to make in 4-2.

The second team lost 6-1 to Yateley, but the thirds won 1-0 against Havant and the fourths beat a depleted City of Portsmouth side 10-0. The fifths narrowly lost 3-2 at Haslemere as Janice Spalding and Tricia Flynn scored.

In the men’s section, Basingstoke lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth.

Bournemouth won the first short corner, which goalkeeper Adam Smith saved well and Basingstoke replied with their own short corner.

Dean Record flicked straight at the keeper, rebounded out to Todd Hutcheson who trapped the ball and fed Ben Jubin who’s shot was saved by the Bournemouth goalkeeper.

A Bournemouth long corner was belted and into the D for a goal. A converted short corner soon after put them two goals ahead at the break.

In the second half, a short corner flick by Dean Record was stopped on the line with a foot, and a flick was awarded. Todd Hutcheson fired the ball over the bar and very nearly over the fence.

Bournemouth attacked and won a short corner. A deflection into the net off the post and the final score was 3-0.

The seconds won 5-1 at Hamble and never looked back after Jacques Lourens netted a short corner and Greg Smith scored from a penalty flick.

Hamble opened their account, but the visitors made it 3-1 by the break as Ben Shaughnessy scored.

Basingstoke dominated the second half and the visitors added a fourth from Paul Handley and then Basingstoke goalkeeper Jorge Spicer produced a great save.

Shaunghnessy completed the scoring with Basingstoke's 100th goal of their league campaign.
