BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club's men’s first team were cruelly denied victory in their first home game of the new season.

Guests Fareham opened the scoring and led 1-0 at the break, but Ben Jubin levelled in the second half and Mark Smith completed the turnaround, riding a couple of challenges before beating the visiting goalkeeper.

The hosts pressed for a third goal and found the net, only to have the effort disallowed, and Fareham levelled in the final minute, breaking from a Basingstoke short corner to get on terms.

The ladies' first team are joint leaders of their division after seeing off fellow high-flyers Wanderers at Down Grange.

Basingstoke took the lead after winning a succession of short corners, Jo Bowden deflecting the ball into the net.

Fi Parker doubled the lead from a Sarah Shearing through-ball, before making it 3-0 just before the break, following good play from Roxy O'Dea.

There was no further scoring in the second half, with Basingstoke claiming a clean sheet.

The second team did not fare so well, losing 3-1 at Havant. The hosts opened the scoring and while Rachel Bomphrey levelled before half-time, Havant scored twice more after the break to wrap up victory.

Both the third and fourth teams faced local rivals Yateley.

The thirds played out 1-1 draw. Basingstoke took the lead early in the second half, Frankie Tierney scoring a penalty flick, but Yateley claimed a late equaliser.

The fourth string were in top form, winning 6-1 despite conceding the first goal of the game.

Basingstoke recovered well and levelled through Sue Pett, with Laura Mallon scoring her first goal for the club to make it 2-1 at the break.

Hannah Wheeler gave Basingstoke some breathing space, before Sharon Holden completed a second-half hat-trick to complete the scoring.

The fifth team hosted Gosport and won 1-0 thanks to Georgina Smith's first-half strike.

The men's second string claimed a good 4-0 win away at Winchester Academy.

Basingstoke took the lead after just one minute, Greg Smith firing home, with further goals coming from Paul Handley, Jacques Lourens and Ben Shaughnessy, who also missed a penalty.

The third team drew 0-0 with visiting Southampton, while the fourths edged out Hamble in a five-goal thriller.

Eliot Boyd's goal had Basingstoke 1-0 up at the break and Alex Simons doubled the lead early in the second half. Hamble pulled one back, but Alex Tatnell made it 3-1 and while the visitors scored a second, Basingstoke held on to win 3-2 and go second in the table.
