TWO late goals saw Basingstoke Hockey Club’s men have to settle for a 2-2 draw at second-placed Woking.

The home side dominated possession for large parts of the first half, but Basingstoke were happy to hit their hosts on the break. These tactics were soon rewarded as Dean Record collected the ball and lifted it over the onrushing Woking goalkeeper.

Basingstoke doubled their advantage from a sweeping move set-up by ex-Woking player Jed Mills.

Mills turned well on the ball to play in Ben Jubin for the simplest of finishes.

The second half was one to forget for the visitors for a variety of reasons, with Basingstoke receiving a number of cards from the umpires.

With the numerical advantage, Woking enjoyed the majority of possession, with almost all the play in the visitors’ half.

With five minutes to go and Basingstoke down to nine men, Woking pulled their goalkeeper for an outfield player, which left the visitors with a three outfield player deficit.

The sheer weight of numbers eventually told and a decent ball into the semi-circle was deflected past Adam Smith to make it 2-1.

Then, with a minute left, Woking equalised as ball across the face of the goal was diverted in at the back post.

The seconds got off to the worst possible start against Haslemere at Down Grange, conceding after 30 seconds.

Unfortunately it got no better for the hosts as they trailed 2-0 at half-time.

Basingstoke made more of a fight of it after the break and enjoyed a good spell of possession, but the only goal came from the visitors as Haslemere ran out 3-0 winners.

The men’s fourths travelled to Alton on the back of a strong run of form, but the visitors started poorly as the home side opened the scoring within the first five minutes. Alton then doubled their lead from a penalty corner.

Basingstoke started the second-half brighter, creating a two-on-one situation which culminated with Adam Neighbour scoring.

Moments later, Neighbour netted his second of the game, scoring from a penalty corner to secure a 2-2 draw.

The only competitive match in the ladies section saw the first team draw 2-2 with Southampton at Down Grange.

The visitors started well, but it was the hosts who drew first blood thanks to Annalise Whitehead’s goal.

Basingstoke then netted a second through Catriona Bauser’s short-corner deflection.

The second half saw some physical play from both sides, which resulted in both being reduced to 10 players.

Southampton pulled a goal back deep into the second half before making it 2-2 with a really late equaliser.
