BASINGSTOKE A’s Southampton League Division Four promotion hopes took a dent as they lost 2.5-1.5 to Winchester B.
Dave Graham recorded the side’s victory and Frank Bonsey secured a draw.
The result leaves them third, two point behind leaders Fareham A, having played one more game.
Basingstoke’s Border League side lost 4-1 to a strong Guildford C team as Tim Chapman and John Shaddick both drew their games.
Shaddick also produced a good performance in the Winchester Open Chess Congress. His 3.5 points put him just outside the prizes.
The Basingstoke Chess Club meet every Wednesday at the Bridge and Chess Club, Maydene, Sherborne Road on the corner of Richmond Road.
