PROMOTED Basingstoke Hockey Club are scoring goals for fun as they cement themselves among the leading lights in South League Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division 1.

They’ve scored 30 from their last five wins – though Fareham II pushed them all the way in a 5-4 Henry Cort thriller, which Basingstoke won after some late scares.

Basingstoke were a goal up inside five minutes against a strengthened Fareham, with Jed Mills picking out Ben Jubin for an early lead.

Fareham’s response was immediate, Australian Dan Sampey equalising with a snap shot inside the D.

Basingstoke continued to push forward and restored the lead when Ben Shaughnessy converted a penalty stroke following a foot on the line from a Jed Mills strike.

Fareham promptly hit back and, despite a fine double save from Smith, the ball rebounded for Sampey to score an equalising second goal.

By half-time, Basingstoke had their noses in front again through Dave Stones, who beat Rory Kemp at the far post from Shaughnessy’s cross.

Basingstoke changed ends 3-2 in front, but the relentless pace continued with Dean Record scoring a fourth – his ninth of the season for the Down Grange club.

Fareham refused to lie down, with Callum McInally reducing the deficit, but on-song Grant Rouse soon popped up to restore Basingstoke’s two-goal advantage.

Basingstoke had to withstand sustained pressure after McInally converted a penalty stroke to cut the gap to 5-4, a scoreline the visitors managed to protect late on as Smith pulled off a string of fine saves.

Basingstoke’s fourth team won 2-0 at Southampton to continue their unbeaten run. Graeme Dyall and Joe McEvoy, with a deflected shot, got the goals.

The fifth team lost 4-0 away to Swanage and Wareham, while the club’s ladies lost their top-of-the-table clash against visiting Lewes 2-1.

The visitors started the sharper of the two teams and scored an early goal.

Basingstoke equalised quickly through a short corner, as Roxy O’Dea’s strike rebounded straight back to her. She controlled and slotted into the corner.

The game winner for Lewes came from a penalty flick after a short corner was saved on the line by a foot.

Despite a gutsy second-half performance with the majority of possession, Basingstoke could not find an equaliser.

The seconds enjoyed a 3-0 home victory over Haselmere with goals from Laura Marks, Gilly Dunning and Ruth Crawford.

The third team lost 4-1 against Fareham, while the fourths beat Portsmouth and Southsea 1-0 – Miranda Smith scoring.

The fifth team had a great 6-1 win against Portsmouth and Southsea.
