BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s men’s fourth string recorded their first win of the season with a 3-0 win at home to Alton.
Captain Eliot Boyd reshuffled some positions in the side to great effect as, minutes into the game, Adam Neighbour shaved the post with a drive from the top of the circle.
Neighbour did not have to wait long to claim a goal though as soon after he executed a similar shot, this time finding the net. The same player soon doubled the lead, scoring from a penalty-corner.
The second half saw Alton fight back but Alex Stewart completed the scoring, trickling the ball into the goal after going one-on-one with the ’keeper.
It was another disappointing day for the second string, who went down 4-0 away at Haslemere. After a sloppy start, the away side found themselves two goals down at half-time and despite an improved second-half display, they conceded two more after the break.
The fifths lost 2-1 away to Hamble. They trailed by one goal at the break and conceded another early in the second half, but a spirited fightback resulted in Alex Stewart scoring after a fine break and run by Miles McPherson.
The ladies’ second string travelled to Isle of Wight and found themselves a goal down at half-time. They improved after the break but were unable to make the most of a string of penalty-corners and lost the game 1-0.
