BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s men’s first team put in a good performance against a strong Wanderers side but were unable to hold on for an impressive victory.

Wanderers finished as runners-up in the league last season but it was Basingstoke who led at the break as Ben Shaughnessy’s pass gave Dave Stones a tap-in.

The visitors levelled when a shot deflected off Alex Miller, giving the goalkeeper no chance, and while Basingstoke had chances to regain the lead, they were unable to take them, the game ending 1-1.

The second string went down 5-1 at Bournemouth, with Will Malone getting their only goal after good work from Ash Perman and Luke Warren.

The ladies first team maintained their unbeaten record with a 2-1 victory over visiting Wimbledon. It was Wimbledon who took an early lead, but Kirsty Kent deflected a short corner from Roxy O’Dea into the net to level the game and it was the same player who got the winner in the second half.

The ladies’ second string lost 2-0 at home to Winchester, conceding a goal in either half, but it was a better day for the fifths, who won 2-1 at Hamble.

The hosts’ early pressure paid off as they took the lead, but second-half goals from Hayley Rouse and Claire Keeley saw Basingstoke fight back to win the game.

The Ladies Masters claimed a 3-0 win over Oxford Eagles in their first match of the season. Gill Rust opened the scoring from Angie Cottee’s cross, Jenny Rust netted the second and Bernice Gunn added a third after half-time.
