TADLEY Calleva once again put up a battling performance in the FA Vase, but in the end they were beaten in the replay on the Isle of Wight in extra time by Newport (IoW).

The Wessex League Division One outfit, earned their chance to have another crack at their Premier Division opponents, after they drew after extra time in the first game 2-2.

Having had their first trip last Tuesday to the island aborted after the game was postponed, Tadley set out again on Saturday and with 15 minutes left found themselves 2-0 down.

This was despite playing the batter football on the day as James Tennant could have had a hat-trick.

At this point, Tadley manger Danny Dolan gambled and went with three up front and this did the trick as Grant Powell pulled a goal back and then two subs combined as Dan Charsley converted a cross from James Milford to make it 2-2.

Once again the game went into the extra time and Newport took the lead. Tadley’s Brett Denham had a chance with one-on-one, before the home side scored their fourth goal.

Talking after the game Dolan said: "It was a brilliant achievement for this club to reach the third round for the first time and to twice take a step five side to extra time.

"I must thank all the supporters who made the trip to the Isle of Wight."

Tadley return to league action on Tuesday night, when they entertain Fleet Spurs.
