A SPECIAL game to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Basingstoke and District Sunday League at Winklebury saw the Basingstoke Sunday League beat Aldershot Sunday League 2-0 at Winklebury.

Basingstoke, in red and black, kicked off and started brightly, with Alex Izzo heading a cross wide of the post in the first minute.

Then a throw in from Cobi Judd was pulled down by Joe Hill and his shot on the turn, testing the goalkeeper.

Aldershot only broke out of their half in the sixth minute, when progress was halted by a timely intervention from skipper Lee Head. In the ninth minute, Aldershot's star player Bobby Marlow fired just.

A looping shot from Basingstoke's Mark Beagley was saved before on the 20 minute mark, Marlow cracked a great shot off the bar.

A brilliant save from home goalie Paul Wade kept the scoreline 0-0.

After 10 minutes of visitors' pressure, Basingstoke relieved the situation in the best possible way. Judd on the right crossed to Hill in the centre and even if surrounded by defenders. he maintained his cool, controlled the ball and fired a right foot shot into the left hand corner of the net to make it 1-0 with 35 minutes on the clock.

Aldershot came back strongly, with Marlow again proving a handful, turning superbly and firing wide from distance.

On 42 minutes, Judd received a great through ball, his right-foot shot to the left being well saved by the goalkeeper.

Aldershot attacked from the second half kick off and Marlow fired over the bar.

After a foul on Hill, approaching the hour mark, Judd's shot was well saved. Aldershot then had the ball in the net on three minutes later, following a cross from the left, but it was ruled out for offside.

On the visitors went close again as Marlow picked out Jake Hutson, who blasted his shot against the woodwork.

The home side then doubled their lead as Hill fired in his second goal at the near post with 11 minutes to go.

Aldershot stormed back over the final minutes of the game, but were unable to find the net.

Andy Sacco, for many years Sunday League Fixture Secretary, awarded the medals and a book of history of the league to each player and official.
