NEWLY-PROMOTED Basingstoke Athletic suffered a 4-0 defeat at home to TwentyTen on the opening day of the Basingstoke and District Saturday League Division One season.

Athletic won the Division Two title last season, but they found themselves a goal down after just two minutes of the new campaign, Franklyn Spacagna forcing the ball home from close range following a corner.

Joe Hill almost doubled the lead before Spacagna got his second of the game 23 minutes in, heading home from Joe Osborne's long throw. Hill made it 3-0 from out wide on the stroke of half-time.

Athletic had chances but were unable to take them and the only goal of the second half was scored by Carl Pearson, who found the net via the post from Jordon Wainwright's cross.

Basingstoke Labour Club were promoted alongside Athletic, but they got off to a much better start, beating Hampshire Irons 5-3.

Josh Dickens opened the scoring after 10 minutes and Cameron George, who scored 25 goals last season, opened his account for this campaign with the second.

Kieran Dent scored from Craig Hopper's pass to make it 2-1 at the break and the same player then equalised for Irons in the second half.

Goals from Graham Leaney and George had Labour 4-2 up and while Ben Wood made things interesting again, George completed his hat-trick to secure the points for Labour.

Hook showed why they are favourites for the title by beating reigning champions Overton United A 3-0.

Dan Mellors opened the scoring from Adam Haig's pass in the first half, with Andy Parker heading home a far-post corner to double the lead on 65 minutes.

Tim Hearson hit the crossbar for dominant Hook before Aaron King lobbed the Overton goalkeeper to complete the scoring.

Kyle Theodore was in top form for Tadley Calleva A, scoring four times as they beat DJS Telecoms 6-2.

DJS took an early lead through Peter Lomax, but Theodore soon levelled, finding the net after Lee Champion flicked on Ashley Saunders' free-kick.

Carlos Gonzales' free-kick had DJS 2-1 up, but Peter White headed home Champion's throw to level for a second time and Luke Allaston's goal had Tadley ahead at half-time.

Theodore converted Ben Todd's pass to make it 4-2 early in the second half, before converting Liam Belcher's pass to complete his hat-trick and adding a sixth late on.
