DAYERS Fine Foods looked to be heading into the third round of the Hampshire Sunday Intermediate Cup as they led 3-0 against visiting Aldershot side Red Lion after 45 minutes, writes Tony Spencer.

Matt Talmage opened the scoring with a header from a corner, followed by goals from George Lagden and Dave Lee. The visitors, undaunted by the first half mauling, put the home side through the mincer in the second half winning the game 5-3.

Lamb Inn also went out of the same competition beaten 4-1 in Southampton by Titans.

Kaiser Wessex were forced to scratch their tie, allowing Meon Tayz a walkover passage into the third round.

New Inn returned from their Hampshire Sunday Junior A Cup second round tie with their tails between their legs following a comprehensive 4-0 defeat against Boyatt Wood Wanderers from Eastleigh.

Republic of Chineham travelled to Andover’s Arms Athletic and returned triumphant with a 2-0 win in the Kelvin Cup.

Basingstoke Saints played host to Andover side AFC Wolversdene and lost by the odd goal in seven.

The sides were at 2-2 after 90 minutes, but then the visitors scored twice in the first session of extra time.

This left Saints a mountain to climb, though David Gibson scored a penalty to complete his match hat-trick.

Tron saw off Oakley’s challenge 3-0, in the only all-Basingstoke tie in the competition, as Giani Thomas, Michael Moray and Josh Stewart all scored.

In the Bernard Cornish Cup, Basingstoke and District League Division Three side Eastrop Eagles suffered their first home defeat 6-5 in a monumental struggle against the so-far-unbeaten Division Two side FC Everest. The home side scorers were Bobbie Frost (2), Nathan Bennis, Paul Adams with a smart chip, and a direct free-kick from Wes Bush.

Hampshire Irons opened the scoring after 11 minutes in their match, but North Warnborough Two netted eight without reply. Jamie Simmonds opened their account, Ryan Thorpe added the next two, to make it 3-1 at half-time.

After the break, Irons completely fell apart as Pete Keens and Trevor Rogers netted, with Thorpe’s conversion from the penalty spot completing his hat-trick. Peter Hodgeson exploited a breakaway for number seven and Thorpe grabbed his fourth goal to complete the scoring.

Ritchie Bone scored the only goal as DG Athletic went down 6-1 to Soldiers Return Reserves. Connor Izzo opened the scoring with a volley from 18 yards.

Josh Buckingham doubled the lead with a half-volley from a corner, Izzo added his second and Arek Beszireta netted with a header from a corner to make it 4-0 at half-time.

After the break, Joe Allnutt and Jake Allnutt added further to the Soldiers’ tally, before DG’s solitary reply.
