BASINGSTOKE teams enjoyed a good day in the Hampshire A Cup on Saturday, with all four local clubs progressing to the second round.

Sherborne St John needed a marathon penalty shoot-out to see off Southampton side AFC Phoenix after a 3-3 draw.

The Basingstoke side trailed at the break, but a Declan Shuttleworth penalty and Alex Izzo's strike had them 2-1 up. The hosts levelled and while Ronnie Tamale put Sherborne back in front with five minutes to go, Phoenix equalised in the last minute to take the game to penalties.

Sherborne converted their first 10 kicks and won the game when goalkeeper Dave Poynton saved the hosts' 10th effort.

Rising Sun DC enjoyed an easy 13-0 victory over visiting Compton Reserves. Ben Nicholls and Lee Chambers both scored four, with Richard Kalwarsyk, Lorne Howard, Jon Flanagan, Ben Vine and an own-goal completing the scoring.

The only blot on the Basingstoke side's success was a red card for winger Flanagan, who was playing his first game back after a previous suspension.

Sam Cato hit a hat-trick as Bounty United won 5-0 away at BTC Southampton A.

Cato scored the first two goals from Aaron Burt assists, before turning provider as Stuart Leddy made it 3-0. Cato went on to complete his hat-trick and Leddy got his second, missing out on a treble himself by failing to convert a penalty.

Hook had a comfortable 10-1 victory over Isle of Wight visitors Holmwood Athletic. Andy Haig scored four, while Andy Parker and Aaron King both netted twice. Tim Hearson and Pete Silvester were the other scorers.
