BASINGSTOKE Town manager Jason Bristow has secured the signatures of four more members of his Hampshire Senior Cup-winning squad.
Defenders Robbie Rice and Jay Gasson, utility man Nathan Smart and midfielder Simon Dunn have all put pen to paper on new one-year deals, joining striker Liam Enver-Marum in committing their future to the club.
Dunn is a product of the club’s academy system. After breaking into the side in 2012-13, he had a stop-start season last time out, being hampered by a series of injuries, but Bristow sees the 22-year-old as a key player moving forward.
“Simon had a frustrating season with injury, but we really missed his energy when he was out of the side,” Bristow said. “The pace of our attacks was a lot quicker with him in the team. He’s a fantastic player and another big signing for us.”
Towering centre-back Gasson, who was recently named player of the year by the Town supporters, has signed up to spend a fifth season at the Camrose.
“Jay was fantastic for us all season,” Bristow added. “He just kept getting better and better.”
Rice has been at the club even longer. 2014-15 will be his sixth campaign with Basingstoke.
“Robbie is Mr Consistancy,” Bristow said. “You know what you are going to get, whatever position you ask him to play in.
“He’s just as good at centre-back as he is at right-back and he can play in midfield as well, so he is an important signing for us.”
Local lad Smart, who is equally at home playing at right-back or on the right wing, is back for a fifth season with the club.
“I think the season just gone was Nathan’s best season yet,” Bristow said. “He keeps improving and is another player who I think can get even better.”
