Whitchurch charge gathers momentum

WHITCHURCH continued their charge for a Wessex League Division One top three place with a stunning 4-0 victory at third-placed Petersfield last Saturday.
“Everything we tried went right” was manager Jim Macey’s appraisal of the win, which was never in doubt as Whitchurch took the game to the home side.
Whitchurch had several early chances and took the lead on 30 minutes, Pa Touray finishing clinically when Petersfield failed to clear their lines.
The visitors doubled their advantage with virtually the last kick of the half as Luke Walker picked up a loose ball on halfway and beat two men before letting fly.
After the break, the home side came out fighting but Whitchurch weathered the storm and made it 3-0 when Steve Francis headed Ashley Childs’ pinpoint cross into the net.
Then, right on time, Issac Sedu turned the defence before knocking in number four off the post.
On Tuesday night, Whitchurch were at Fleet Town in a Basingstoke Senior Cup quarter-final tie, going out of the competition after a 3-1 defeat.
The visitors held out for an hour before former Basingstoke Town defender Marc Vockins opened the scoring from a free-kick.
John Symons doubled the lead on 72 minutes and, while another goal for Argent gave Whitchurch hope four minutes from time, Leigh Rumbold added a third to ensure victory for Fleet.
This Saturday, Whitchurch will hope to continue their good league form when they entertain lowly Amesbury, having beaten them 4-1 in the reverse fixture (kick-off 3pm).
