BASINGSTOKE’S Dan Reynaldo admitted he had to pinch himself in amazement after helping England’s Physical Disability cricket team break new ground by winning the first multi-team international tournament in the sport’s history.

Only England and Pakistan had competed in the sport internationally before last month’s competition, so the Red Cross International T20 Tournament for people with physical disabilities was a truly ground-breaking event as the duo were joined by Afghanistan, India and hosts Bangladesh.

Reynaldo, who plays for Stratfield Turgis & Hartley Wespall CC, took three wickets on England’s way to the final and grabbed another during the 19-run victory over Pakistan, in arguably the biggest game in the sport’s history.

The 20-year-old said: “It was an unbelievable experience. To have the chance to experience the sub-continent and all the different teams with 15 of your mates was great.

“This is number one in my cricketing achievements and I’m sure if you asked the rest of the guys they would probably say the same.”

England lost their opening game against Bangladesh but went on to beat India, Pakistan and Afghanistan in the group stages before beating Pakistan in the final.

The overall goal of the England and Wales Cricket Board and a number of the other governing bodies is to eventually introduce a World Cup and Reynaldo, who is a former pupil at Costello School and Basingstoke College of Technology, believes the tournament in Bangladesh is a major step forward.

“We just need to keep getting other teams on board to make it happen and hopefully this tournament will help increase the profile of the sport,” he said.
