HARTLEY Wintney kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation from Southern League Division One after an excellent 119-run victory at basement rivals Totton and Eling.

The home side won the toss and put the village side into bat and opener Matt Kerr kept the scoreboard ticking even if he was losing partners.

Hartley had reached 54-3 when captain Scott Baldwin came to the centre and together with Kerr they added 107 for the fourth wicket. Baldwin was the fourth man out for 64 which had come from 62 balls and included one six and 11 fours.

Unfortunately, he was quickly followed by top scorer Kerr (66) whose 114 ball stay at the crease had see him hit eight fours.

As was the case last week the Hartley tail added some useful runs led by Jonny Kerr (30), Julian Ford (18 from 16 balls) and Simon Carter (not out 22) as the village side scored 250-9. Ethan Taylor was the best home bowler with 4-59.

Chasing a good total Totton were soon in trouble as Chris Jolley (3-23) removed both openers cheaply, while Ollie Waddington did really well opening the bowling giving up just 14 runs in five overs.

Having slumped to 40-4, Aaron Wivell (2-32) and Baldwin (4-30) kept the pressure up.

Only some late runs from top scorer Luke Mooney (24 not out) helped their total to 131 all out.

They will hope the great escape continues on Saturday when Hartley entertain Rowledge.
