THE Basingstoke Bison extended their lead at the top of the English Premier League to five points after they completed a weekend double in their top of the table clash with the Peterborough Phantoms.

The Herd followed up Saturday's 3-0 win at home on Saturday with another 3-0 victory in Cambridgeshire on Sunday.

Once again netminder Jon Baston was in brilliant form as he recorded back-to-back shut-outs and Sunday night's was even more impressive for the shot stopper as he faced 40 shots.

His shut-out earned him the man of the match award and also took his tally of shut-outs for the Bison to five this season which equalled the club record for a single season held by Dean Skinns, but this is of course in only 10 games.

Sunday's game in Cambridgeshire proved to be another close contest and the Bison took the lead at 4:31 as Aaron Connolly netted assisted by Miroslav Vantroba and Shaun Thompson.

The advantage was doubled by the first buzzer thanks to an unassisted strike from Joe Greener.

The second session saw Peterborough throw everything, but the kitchen sink at Baston, but they were unable to find a way past him and it remained 2-0 to the Bison at the second break.

The Phantoms continued to pile on the pressure in the third period and with three minutes left in the final session, Peterborough pulled their netminder Janis Auzlins for the extra skater.

Unfortunately, the move back fired as Declan Balmer found Connolly to score his second of the night into the empty net some 40 seconds later.

The Bison have now won their last six games and this weekend face the Manchester Phoenix on home ice on Saturday, before a trip to Hull on Sunday.
