BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants Athletic Club’s under-15 girls claimed a bronze medal at the Saucony English Cross Country Relays.

More than 100 teams started the race, which was held in Nottinghamshire. Each team was made up of three runners, all of who completed the 2km course before handing over to a team-mate.

Taking the lead leg for Basingstoke was Rebecca Bullock and she ensured that her team were in contention at the first change over, clocking 7min 23sec for her leg and handing over the baton in 12th place, 19 seconds behind the leader. Maddie Deadman then took over and she impressed, taking the lead halfway around the course and reaching the end of her section in 7:00, 17 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.

Rebecca Poole took the final leg and while she was unable to hold off runners from Herne Hill Harriers and Blackheath and Bromley, she did clock 7:22 to earn the team third place, just seven seconds behind winners Blackheath and Bromley.

Basingstoke’s B team of Hannah Reed, Emily Cornwall and Jess Sutton also had a good day, finishing 73rd.
