BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants claimed victory at the opening Southern Cross Country League event of the season.

The Down Grange club hosted the event in Pamber Forest, winning both the men’s, women’s and overall events.

Jenny Helyar was the top performer, finishing second in the women’s race. The first three runners counted in the team event and Helyar’s run, in addition to Tracey Cornell’s sixth place and Becky Crisp’s seventh, meant Basingstoke were easy winners.

Sian Kirk (8th), Rebecca Jakeman (10th), Angela Goodwin (11th) and Charlotte Earl (16th), finished inside the top 20.

Mat Shayler was the top Basingstoke man, finishing fifth. The first five runners from each club counted towards the team score, so David Stanley (11th), Marc Soane (15th), Russell Burton (16th) and Steve Jeffrey (20th) helped Basingstoke claim victory.

With both teams winning, the Down Grange club also won the overall award.
