HE’S made it – Robert Tobin will live his Olympic dream in London next month after being selected for Team GB’s athletics team.

The Old Basing runner has set his sights on running in the final of the 4x400m relay – and, having missed out on a medal in Beijing, when Great Britain finished fourth, he is hopeful of getting a medal this time around in his home Olympics.

Tobin is part of an eight-man squad which also features Nigel Levine, Conrad Williams, Martyn Rooney, Luke Lennon Ford, Richard Buck, Dai Greene and Jack Green.

The team will take to the track for the heats of the relay on Thursday, August 9, with the final taking place the following day in the Olympic Stadium.

The 28-year-old was delighted to be selected on Tuesday. He said: “My whole season, the trials and taking part in the European Championships, was all about being selected for London 2012.

“There is never going to be a home Olympics again in my lifetime so this is what all the training has been for.

“I am expecting it to be a phenomenal atmosphere in the stadium when we run and I just can’t wait for the experience.”

For the Basingstoke and Mid Hants athlete, this will be his third Olympics, and he feels the home team have a great chance of a medal with their main rivals being the USA, Bahamas and Jamaica.

Tobin said: “My aim is keep running well to make sure I am in the best shape possible for the Olympics. We have a strong squad and I can’t see any reason why we can’t win a medal.”

The Old Basing runner added to his impressive medal collection last Sunday night in Helsinki with a European Championship silver medal as the Great Britain 4x400 team, that included Nigel Levine, Conrad Williams and Richard Buck, were just beaten by Belgium.

Tobin ran the third leg of the relay, leading from start to finish and handing the baton over to Buck, who was beaten to the line by Kevin Borlee.

Tobin said: “We were aiming for gold but the last leg by Borlee was exceptional.

“It was a new experience for me to lead from the front, and it is more difficult than when you are tracking someone.

“As a team, we did as well as we could, so I can’t be disappointed with a silver medal. We will have a stronger team in the Olympics so I see no reason why we can’t beat the Belgians there.”

It was Tobin’s third European Championship silver medal following on from similar success in Gothenburg (2008) and Barcelona (2010).

Also competing in Helsinki on the same evening was Hook distance runner Charlie Purdue in the 10,000m final where she finished sixth in a time of 32min 28.46sec, which was outside the Olympic qualifying time of 31:45.00.

Teammate Jo Pavey won the silver medal in Helsinki and will be joined in the Olympics 10,000m event by Julia Bleasdale as 21-year-old Purdue missed out on selection. The rising star will now set her sights on making the Olympic squad in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
