OVERTON and Basingstoke Taekwondo returned from the Taekwondo Chungdokwan GB Championships in Bracknell with three gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.

The event attracted clubs from across Britain, as well as teams from France, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia, making it one of one of the largest Olympic-style Taekwondo events in this country in the last couple of years.

The Overton team had players competing across five patterns divisions and 10 sparring divisions.

There were many excellent performances from the club’s experienced players as well as a few who were competing at this level for the very first time.

Alex Walker won the junior male poomsae for the club’s first gold medal in the Patterns (Poomsae) Divisions in his first poomsae tournament for a while.

The other two golds were in the sparring as Neo Botha found herself in a combined grade division and won a hard fought semi-final 11-9, before a crushing victory in the final 9-0 to take the cadet female intermediate/advanced.

The final gold came from Bradley Welsman in his first tournament for Overton – having recently moved to the club.

In a small division, he had a bye to the cadet male intermediate final. He opened the final with a single really quick head shot and the match was over in 10 seconds, a new club record win.

Welsman also won a silver in poomsae, while Alex Stock collected a silver in sparring in the cadet male intermediate class.

Holly Flanders won a bronze in the junior female novice for poomsae, while there were six bronzes in the sparring – going to Kamil Nowak (Cadet Male Intermediate 53kg to 57kg), Amy Stock (Junior Female Intermediate under 59kg), Flanders (Junior Female Intermediate 63kg to 68kg), Dave Bristow (Veteran Male Intermediate over 80kg), Luke Rowland (Senior Male Novice over 87kg) and Simon Jones (Senior Male Novice under 74kg) Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo are now preparing for a summer of tournaments leading up to the British Taekwondo National Championships in Manchester in September.
