SIX karate fighters Su-Ha-Ri Karate School returned with 14 medals from the Western Karate Union Open Championships held in Weston-super-Mare.

The day got off to a good start in the kata, as 14-year-old Mia Lane contested the girls 13-15 years intermediate category.

After dominating all four rounds she emerged with the gold medal.

Lane then teamed up with 12-year-old Harry Beveridge from Alton for the under-16’s synchronised Pairs kata.

The duo performed brilliantly through several rounds and took a well-earned silver. Lane ended her day with a bronze in individual fighting.

Nathan Audsley (9) took bronze in the under 10’s three-man team fighting event.

Despite being the youngest in both categories, Lexie Green (10) of Tadley, first took bronze in the under-16’s pairs kata with Mia Pawson, then went on to take silver in the girls’ 10 to 12 years team fighting event.

Bishop’s Challoner student Anthony Parmar took bronze in the boys 10 to 12’s team fighting.

Sibi Kumara (14) of Costello School fought with great wisdom in the boys’ 13 to 15yrs category.

His smart fighting got him through four rounds to the final, where he was narrowly beaten 2-0 by one of the top ranked English fighters, Stephen Lloyd of Kaisho.

With one silver under his belt, Kumara then teamed up with Tadley’s Lucas Spiers (13) and Joe Clifford for the boys’ 13 to 15 years team fighting event.

The trio fought valiantly against older teams to reach the final but were defeated by the Kaisho team, earning the boys another silver.

Overall the club took three golds, five silvers and six bronze medals and finished ninth out of 38 clubs.

Coach Kevin Crine said: “This is a great result. Some of them were the youngest in their categories, so they did very well to go up against older more experienced fighters.”

Su-Ha-Ri Karate School trains at Basingstoke Sports Centre on Fridays, from 6.45pm to 7.45pm and at Tadley Swimming Pool on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm.
