BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club welcomed the best over 60’s ladies players from across England last weekend.

Partnering Southern Counties Hockey Association, BHC hosted the tournament at the Down Grange complex with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s assistance.

This was the first time the tournament was held in the South and also over two days.

Basingstoke members took on various roles to ensure the success of the weekend, with Miranda Smith as BHC liaison and head of hospitality, Sarah Mainprise-Tait tournament officer and Mark Smith was the South squad’s Manager.

Sue Pett, who plays for the ladies fourth team, was a member of the South squad.

She scored in the South's 3-1 victory over the Midlands which secured the title after they opened with a 0-0 draw against the East and then beat the West 1-0 and the North 3-0.

Simon Orr of So Physical and BHCs Georgie Smith were on site to ease players aching muscles, only taking donations to help boost the fundraising for the second pitch, and Rosanna and Andy Goddard were on hand to take photos.

Cakes were baked, the bar and kitchen were open to all, and younger members of BHC were on hand to help make the weekend a real success.

Sara Walker Chair of South Masters Hockey and Tournament Director said “We were treated to excellent hospitality at the club with members of all ages working hard to support the event. The standard of play was amazing and an inspiration to young people. Congratulations to the South who won the gold medal, West taking the silver, and East and Midlands sharing bronze.”

If any ladies would like to have a go or re-start playing hockey, Basingstoke are running ‘back to hockey’ sessions 7 to 8pm at Down Grange astro on Wednesdays from June 14 through to July 19.
