FOUR members of the Basingstoke based Wessex Wyvern Modern Pentathlon Club returned with five medals from the UIPM Biathle World Championships in Florida.

The event saw 500 athletes from 25 countries competing and the quartet represented Great Britain in the biathle (a continuous run/ swim/run event) and picked up three gold and two silvers between them.

Maddie Deadman topped the medal haul, with gold medals in the mixed relay and the individual under-17 girls events in the individual event.

Deadman fought off stiff competition from a South African athlete, pulling her back in the swim. She eventually beating her in a sprint finish to the line to take gold and be crowned the world individual champion for her age group.

Rebecca Poole, also competed in the same age group and put in an excellent performance, followed Deadman home in sixth place and in doing so helped secure the team silver medal for the GB under-17 girls team.

Andy Poole finished a creditable seventh and helped GB win the Masters B team gold, whilst James Symons finished 14th in a very competitive Youth A (under-19) event.
