A FINAL-DAY victory over Old Basing saw Alton secure second place in Whitchurch Bowls League Division Two, earning promotion to the top flight at the expense of Whitchurch Blacks.

The final of the BDB Monday triples league took place at Whitchurch between AWRE and Howard Park B, with AWRE winning a close contest by seven shots.

The final of the Stan Hardman saw AWRE B come back from 43-26 deficit against Hook Sapphires to draw level at 51-51. AWRE won by virtue of the fact that they won on two rinks, giving them a 4.5-2.5 win.

Two matches were played at Loddon Vale last weekend, with a win for the Vale against Somerset Patrons by 173 shots to 125.

Winning rinks were skipped by Ray Ogg (32-10), Don Lee (29-13), Alan Tait (25-14), John Holmes (22-12), Ray Harris (19-18) and Frank Fuller (15-14). There were two losing rinks, skipped by Shaila Girle (23-15) and Brian Ambler (21-16).

Loddon Vale beat Oxford on all four rinks in their opening Wessex League match, while a match at Wey Valley saw the visitors lose 141-105.

Winning rinks were Jim Rainbow (20-18) and Alan Tait (23-22). Losing rinks were Peter Grant (30-14), Margaret Coutts (29-12), Mick Jones (20-19) and John Hilton (22-17).
