HOOK and Newnham Basics batsman were in superb form at Hartley Wintney as they scored 408-5 the second highest ever total in a Southern League Division One game as they won by 197 runs.

The home side’s bowling attack was already minus Chris Jolley and Scott Baldwin and they were further depleted when Mark Teale was struck on the shin by the ball hit straight back at him and limped out of the game.

Hook having won the toss and decided to bat and opener Kieran Thomson hit a half century, before being the first man out thanks to a catch by Will Ross, which gave Mark Teale a wicket before he departed.

Jordan Hobday then took up the mantle with a superb innings of big hitting as he smashed nine sixes and six fours and deserved a century, but was out for 99 as a straight drive from Ben Thane saw Seb Waddington deflect the ball onto the stumps for a run out for the non striker.

After a brief innings from Matt Love, Matt Buckingham opened the blade as he helped himself to six sixes on his way to a fine 60.

He was then bowled by the impressive young spinner Waddington (3-63) as this bat flew out of this hand and landed at square leg.

Nick Willcock maintained the run rate as he hit three sixes in a quick fire unbeaten 27.

Meanwhile, it was often forgotten at the other end opener Thane batted for the whole 50 overs, before caught on the final ball as he finished on 135 and hit 16 fours and four sixes.

This was his second century of the season and both had been at Hartley.

The home side innings got off to the worst possible start as Jack Hersh was trapped leg before by Spencer Champ (3-37) with the second ball of the innings.

However, the Hartley batsman dug in and Aaron Wivell showed a return to form as he hit three sixes and eight fours in his 79.

He formed a nice partnership with Dan Wrenn (26), but he was run out by Anik Divecha in the same circumstances as Hobday.

Richard Willcock back in the Hook side this week for Ben Allnutt saw his first over go for 15, but he returned to take three wickets and bowled Will Ross (29) who had a fine knock and Tommy Flanders who smashed three sixes in one over to take Hartley past 200.

The side with only 10 batters were eventually bowled out for 211, so the visitors won by 197 runs.

Next up for Hook is a home game against Basingstoke and North Hants, while Hartley entertain Liphook.
