BASINGSTOKE School of Martial Arts enjoyed a triple whammy of success at the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open.

Several members of the club travelled to the Skydome, in Coventry, for the event, and Kevin Hall, Jack Brickley and Max Antonowicz all returned home with gold medals hung proudly around their necks.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a very sophisticated grappling art and self defence technique that focuses mainly on ground fighting.

It uses good technique, leverage and timing to defeat an opponent.

BJJ is famous for the expert being able to defeat a much larger and stronger opponent by using joint-locks and choke-holds and is popular among mixed martial artists.

Hall picked up his first British title after seven years of training, having been teaching BJJ for the past five.

Brickley recently returned to the sport and six months into his comeback, he was crowned British champion.

Antonowicz has been training with the Basingstoke club for about eight months.

He now has the British title to add to a European bronze medal that he won earlier in the year.

In total, Basingstoke School of Martial Arts took nine students to Coventry, with six of them juniors.

As well as the trio of golds, they won four bronze medals, with Isabella Griffioen, Luke Etheridge, Holly Collins and Lauren Collins all finishing third in their respective categories.
