OLD Basing golfer Jack Owen helped his American college team to the quarter-finals of a nationwide competition.
The 21-year-old, whose family home is in Bexmoor Way, represented Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division Two championships.
Owen, pictured, shot rounds of 75 (+4), 69 (-2) and 70 (-1) at Edgewood Country Club to finish fourth at the Atlantic/East Region Championship, a result that helped his team book a spot at the national final.
That took place at the Meadows Golf Course, in Allendale, Michigan, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania reached the knockout stages by finishing eighth in a strokeplay qualifying event. Owen finished 63rd at 16-over-par.
The knockout stages saw players compete in individual strokeplay matches and Owen’s college were drawn against top seeds Nora Southeastern Michigan in the quarter-finals.
The Sherfield Oaks member was two shots down at the turn in his match, but a massive turnaround at the 10th saw him take the lead. He found himself behind again with 13 holes played but pulled level on 14.
The match was tied going down the last, but Owen could not snatch the win, taking a shot more on the final hole to lose by a single stroke, with Indiana University of Pennsylvania losing the match 3-2.
