This live event has finished
- FULL-TIME - Sutton United 4-0 Basingstoke Town
- Town well beaten by in-form Sutton in front of big crowd at Gander Green Lane.
- Scannell puts Sutton ahead after just five minutes.
- McCallum double has hosts in total control before half-time.
- Sutton lose Binns to a second yellow on 64.
- Dean Sinclair adds a fourth 15 minutes from time.
That's all for today folks. However, join Graham Merry for live coverage of Basingstoke Bison v Sheffield Steeldogs very soon, while I am off to Reading to cover Basingstoke boxer Dean Francis' British title fight against Bob Ajisafe.
Join me later on for that and again for Tuesday's game between Town and struggling Tonbridge Angels at the Camrose.
Today's results leave Town 12th in the Conference South table, nine points off the play-offs with 12 games to go. They would need to win 10 of them to get to 70 points, which is generally what is needed to finish fifth. Probably out of reach.

Think that for me personally has to be the new worst performance of the season really
I try not to moan but i certainly won't be at all happy if we play like this come the 12th of May
pathetic performance Stoke i know games have caught up upon us but that was pretty poor today in all areas
Elsewhere, Basingstoke RFC went down 30-29 at Westcombe Park to an injury-time try.
Southampton beat Norwich 4-2, while it ended 0-0 between Reading and Derby.
A pretty dismal afternoon for Town, who were well beaten by a better side today. I think that's the play-off dream over now.
Reaction to follow.
Sutton United 4-0 Basingstoke Town
90+3 - Flicks from Matthews and Williams have Ibe in behind but the angle is tight and Brown makes the save. The goalkeeper then has to tip Green's corner over the crossbar.
90+2 - Another Sutton attack, but this time it ends with Lee Sawyer shooting well over.
90 - A long thow finds Matthews, who manages to turn in the area, but his shot is too close to Brown in the home goal and lacks power.
There will be four minutes of added time at the end of the match. This can't end soon enough.
89 - The game has stopped because Sutton's Michael Spillane is down. Looks like he'll be okay to continue though.
86 - Basingstoke Town - Marcus Johnson-Schuster on for Wes Daly.
The attendance has just been announced. There are 2,172 people here today. Will be interesting to see how many turn up when Town have a similar offer later this month.
83 - Important challenge from Smart to deny Haysman a strike at goal. He could easily have given a penalty away there. Sutton are down to 10 men, but you wouldn't know it.
82 - Wells just about cuts out a cross to deny Haysman a goal.
81 - Lee Sawyer - Sutton United
76 - Sutton United 4-0 Basingstoke Town - Dean Sinclair
Another poor goal to concede. McCallum is allowed to cut back on his left foot and cross from the right, with DEAN SINCLAIR ghosting in unmarked to head past Wells.
75 - Ibe has the ball in the net for a second time but it's disallowed again, this time for a none-too-subtle foul by Matthews.
73 - Good work from the tireless McCallum down the left but his cross goes out for a goal-kick.
71 - Sutton United - Danny Shitta on for Damian Scannell.
Town will be glad to see the back of Scannell, who has been excellent all afternoon. His replacement has the best name in the league.
70 - Town think they have pulled one back when Ibe pokes in Green's low centre - but the flag is up for offside. Must have been tight.
4:26pm Sat 15 Mar 14
That's a nice Town move but Soares chooses not to shoot from Kezie Ibe's clever touch and the chance is snuffed out.
SHOOT MAN no harm in having a go even if it goes over the bar and into someone's garden
seen so many times this season situations like that where we could/should get something from clever touches or difficult positions but we can't decide to shoot
that can sometimes mean a difference from losing to drawing or even winning a game
67 - Another strike from distance for Town. Another shot way over.
64 - Dale Binns - Sutton United
Binns brings Ibe down and, having already been booked, that's a second yellow card and a red follows. Two harsh bookings but can Town take advantage.
63 - Haysman almost has an instant impact, his pass putting McCullum through, but Gasson gets back to make a crucial challenge.
62 - Sutton United - Kane Haysman on for Jamie Taylor
59 - The hard-working Taylor does well down the right but Wells is able to catch his cross-shot.
58 - That's a nice Town move but Soares chooses not to shoot from Kezie Ibe's clever touch and the chance is snuffed out.
57 - Almost an excellent goal as Scannell meets a cross from the right on the volley, the ball fizzing just over the crossbar.
55 - Sutton United - Dean Sinclair on for Craig Dundas.
51 - Sutton search for a fourth, but a couple of good blocks save the day and Town clear.
50 - Already much better from the visitors. McAuley nicks the ball and plays Green in but his low cross is put behind for a corner, which Sutton clear unconvincingly.
48 - Scannell gets in space on the left side of the area but his shot is deflected into the side-netting.
47 - Half-chance for McAuley down the right channel. He gets a low shot away but Brown is down to make a comfortable save.
It's a very attacking formation for Town now, with three strikers and two attacking midfielders. They will certainly go down fighting.
Sutton get the second half under way. Unsurprisingly, they are unchanged.
45 - Basingstoke Town - Robbie Matthews and Shaun McAuley on for Andrew Jenkinson and Robbie Rice.
Looks like Town will be making a couple of changes before the second half gets under way. Robbie Matthews and Shaun McAuley are stripped and ready for action.
Elsewhere, Basingstoke RFC are 17-10 up away at Westcombe Park. Southampton are 1-0 up at home to Norwich, Morgan Schneiderlin with the goal, while it's goal-less between Reading and Derby.
3:47pm Sat 15 Mar 14
3-0 now game over in my books such a shame
i hope we won't play like this at Fratton Park
3:41pm Sat 15 Mar 14
Injury's and games coming thick and fast along with Matt Partridge being a fool on the road waiting sentencing i have to be one that now admits to saying we will not make the playoff's losing 2-0 to Sutton
Its a shame really few games ago I along with others thought we could make a real push for the playoffs but now the wheels have finally come off
A pretty terrible first half for Town. They were very much second best throughout and just couldn't handle Sutton's direct threat.
I think it's safe to say that this one is over.
Sutton United 3-0 Basingstoke Town
45+1 - Dale Binns - Sutton United
45 - Town muster their first shot, but the ball flies way over Jason Brown's goal. There will be two minutes of stoppage time.
43 - Binns is in down the left and it takes a good block from Gasson to stop him getting a powerful shot on target.
39 - Sutton United 3-0 Basingstoke Town - Gavin McCallum
That's probably that, and it's a terrible goal to concede.
Rice misjudges a clearance, gifting Taylor the ball and he puts in a great pass for GAVIN McCULLUM to poke in his second of the afternoon from close range.
Jay Gasson looked favourite to cut that out, but he failed to make contact.
35 - More good work from Scannell, this time down the left. His cross takes a deflection off Rice and almost creeps in at the far post.
30 - Good work from Taylor has Scannell in behind but he's under pressure from Rice and can only fire off a weak shot straight at Wells.
28 - Taylor shoots from the edge of the area and is not far away.
26 -Wells is off his line quickly to meet Scannell, who tries to lob him. The 'keeper is equal to it, getting up to beat the ball away.
24 - Sutton United 2-0 Basingstoke Town - Gavin McCallum
Too easy for the hosts. Dale Binns' deep cross finds Scannell on the right side of the area and he has time to take a touch before squaring to give GAVIN McCALLUM a tap-in.
23 - A long kick from the goalkeeper finds Taylor, who controls the ball 30 yards out, turns and fires in a shot. It's dipping, but not in time to get under the crossbar.
19 - Wells just about claws a cross from the left away from Charlie Clough, who is up for every throw.
15 - Robbie Rice - Basingstoke Town
A pretty poor shot from distance takes a deflection and almost turns into the perfect pass for Taylor. He's in front of Rice, the two come together and Taylor is down just outside the area.
It's soft, but having given the free-kick, the referee is a bit leinient towards Rice, showing only yellow. He was the last man.
The free-kick is hit over the crossbar.
14 - That's an important challenge by Ray on Taylor. Town are on the back foot here.
13 - Jamie Taylor gets up to flick a long ball on. McCallum picks it up and pulls the ball across for Taylor on the edge of the area, but he fluffs his lines.
10 - McCallum thinks he is through, but the offside flag denies him. A couple of minutes ago, David Ray had a big go at Wells when he failed to come out and collect a through-ball. It's not going well.
5 - Sutton United 1-0 Basingstoke Town - Damian Scannell
That's a lovely goal, but Town are really up against it now. The visitors turn off a bit from a throw, allowing DAMIAN SCANNELL to play a neat one-two with Gavin McCallum on the left side of the area and slot home past Louis Wells.
3 - Louie Soares is brought down in the right channel but Adam Green's free-kick is over everybody in the middle.
They are very much outnumbered, but the Town fans here are trying to make themselves heard.
Town get the game under way. They will have the sun in their faces in the first half.
Here come the teams, led out by the aforementioned Tim Vine.
Comedian Tim Vine just disappeared down the tunnel. He's leading Sutton out today and is dressed in the full kit to mark the occasion.
Summer must be on the way. At this moment, I can see shorts, shirt sleeves, sunglasses and even an ice cream van! Not to mention a strange giraffe, which would appear to be Sutton's mascot.
In soulless sutton..to watch the mighty @BASINGSTOKE_FC get the 3 points!! #YESmovement— @Skitzz18 15 March 2014
Town are making their way into the changing rooms to make their final preparations. Sutton follow them in.
The teams are out warming up and the ground is gradually filling. There's going to be a fair few people here today.
One player not involved for Town today is Reading midfielder Matt Partridge.
There was talk of the loan player returning after an ankle injury today, despite the fact he is awaiting sentence for a serious road-rage attack.
However, the club yesterday announced that they would not be using the player, at least until he has been sentenced.
It's the right call in my eyes. Click here for my view of the situation.
Sutton United: Brown, John, Binns, Spillane, Downer, Clough, Scannell, Sawyer, Dundas, Taylor, McCallum. Subs: Sinclair, Shitta, Haysman, Slabber, Lovelock.
Basingstoke Town: Wells, Rice, Green, Jenkinson, Gasson, Ray, Daly, Smart, Ibe, Williams, Soares. Subs: Adams, Debattista, Matthews, Johnson-Schuster.
Town seem to be on the way to getting over their injury crisis, with three of the six players who missed the defeat to Eastbourne on Tuesday involved today.
Wes Daly and Manny Williams all start, with Shaun McAuley on the bench. Simon Dunn, Neil Barrett and Jordace Holder-Spooner remain sidelined.
Robbie Martthews and Marcus Johnson-Schuster drop to the bench. Looks like 4-4-2 for Town, with Robbie Rice dropping back to right-back after starting in the centre of midfield the other day.
Sutton have a strong squad including Dale Binns, Charlie Clough, Damian Scannell and Craig Dundas. Well-known names at this level.
Elsewhere this afternoon, Basingstoke RFC are away at Westcombe Park in National League Three London. A win this afternoon would put them a massive step closer to safety.
Reading are at home to Derby in the Championship, while Southampton are hosting Norwich in the Premier League. Live updates from the Saints game can be found by clicking here but I'll try to keep you in touch with all three.
Town go into today's game 11th in the Conference South, seven points off the play-off places. Defeat today and they are probably out of it.
However, getting something from the game will be no small task. Jason Bristow has described the game as one of the hardest his side will face all season.
Sutton are flying, getting into the sort of form that could see them challenge for the title.
It's a lovely sunny afternoon in Sutton. Pitch looks in decent shape as well. Hopefully set up for a good afternoon of football.
Good afternoon and welcome to live text coverage of this afternoon's game between Basingstoke Town and Sutton United at Gander Green Lane.
Looks set to be a busy afternoon in South London. With free entry on offer, a big crowd is expected, and I was lucky to nab one of the last parking spaces more than an hour before kick-off.
Seems Town will face an intimidating atmosphere.
