BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club went through Saturday undefeated, with all five ladies’ sides securing league victories and three wins and three draws for the men.

As a result, with one game to go before the Christmas break, both first teams sit top of their respective leagues.

The ladies’ first team missed a series of short corner opportunities, saw a penalty flick saved, and were denied by a superb goal-line clearance. However, they ran out 1-0 winners against Andover thanks to Roxy O’Dea’s brilliant deflection from Fi Holdcroft’s cross.

The victory ensures that the ladies top South Division 3B by five points at the halfway stage after winning all 11 games they have played so far.

The second team hosted league leaders Southampton II and won 1-0, meaning they sit third in the league going into Christmas. Sarah Mainprise got the winner from a Sarah Lemasney pass.

The ladies fourth team won 2-0 at Everest to stay third in Division Six, ’keeper Gemma Allan saving a penalty before two short-corner goals from Philippa Spicer secured the victory.

The fifth team won 3-0 at Petersfield. Louise Posthuma put 13-year-old Heidi Barker through to slot home clinically for the opener.

Barker’s second-half shot resulted in a rebound goal for Janice Spalding and the youngster completed a fine performance with her second goal late on.

The third team continue to climb the table after coming back from Southampton with a 4-2 victory. Two first-half goals from Jenny Rust gave the away side an early advantage and Leanne Smith knocked home a Gill Rust strike at a short corner for 3-0.

Southampton pulled one back but Jo Lockyer made it 4-1 and only an unfortunate late own-goal gave the home side their second.

The men were disappointed to draw 4-4 at strugglers Romsey after being 4-2 up courtesy of two goals from Danny Bowden, one a penalty, a short corner from Graham Lang and an excellent Grant Rouse finish.

However, other results went their way and a point was enough to keep the men’s first team at the top of Hampshire/Surrey Division Two.

The men’s second team went 1-0 down at home to Winchester but Paul Handley equalised, Phil Stewart put the hosts ahead and Handley’s second had Basingstoke 3-1 up. Winchester made it 3-2 late on but Basingstoke remain third in the table.

The veterans secured a hard fought 2-1 win over Tulse Hill and Dulwich Artillery with goals from Steve Springthorpe and Jason Smith.

The third and fourth teams both drew. The threes were held 2-2 at home to Salisbury and the fourths held Fareham 7s to a 0-0 draw at Everest.

The Vikings ended up the top scorers on the day, returning from Fleet and Ewshot with three points having scored eight goals. Eliot Boyd got five of them, while Alex Tatnell, Alex Simons, and Ruaridh Tuach netted the others in an 8-1 win.

On Sunday, a hat-trick from Jenny Rust was not enough to prevent the Ladies’ Masters suffering their first defeat of the season in the South Masters League, going down 4-3 to a good Eastcote side.

Petersfield U16s gained revenge for a cup defeat to their Basingstoke counterparts with an 8-4 win at Down Grange earlier in the day. Phil Reid, Robert Sheldrake, Will Calhoun, and Karl Neighbour shared the home goals.
