THE Wildash sisters stole the show as Basingstoke and Mid Hants athletes produced a string of strong performances at the latest Hampshire Cross Country League meeting.

Basingstoke hosted the third |meeting of the season at Popham airfield, with 642 runners competing in the eight races staged during the day.

The home charge was led by Gemma and Lucy Wildash, with Gemma finishing second in the under-17 girls race and Lucy doing the same in the under-15 girls event.

The Basingstoke team finished first in the under-17 girls event and have a comfortable lead in the overall standings. Gemma Wildash was joined by Jenny Helyar, who finished fifth, one place ahead of club-mate Charlotte Chalwin, while Freya Davis was eighth.

Elsewhere, there were ninth-place finishes for Linda Van der Wel in the veterans’ event and Gemma Bigg in the under-20 race. Overton Harriers’ Cath Wheeler and Audrea Dennison were sixth and 10th respectively in the veterans’ event.

Basingstoke’s John Hutchins finished eighth in the senior men’s race, helping the team to fourth place, while Overton’s Sean Holmes was fourth in the veterans event.

Basingstoke and Mid Hants enjoyed further success in the under-17 boys race, winning the team event to move up to second in the standings. Ollie Butler finished sixth, one place ahead of Brendan O’Connor.

The under-15 boys did almost as well, finishing second on the day to move up to third in the standings. Jack Ladhams was the top performer, finishing eighth, one place ahead of club-mate James Beeks.
