IT WAS a victory for pedestrians when a new crossing was finally installed on a Basingstoke business park.

As previously reported in The Gazette, people walking to work on Basing View had complained to Hampshire County Council that no measures had been put in place for pedestrians using the business park, after a subway was closed to allow work on the new multi-million pound John Lewis at home and Waitrose store.

But finally, months after work started on the development, a signalised crossing was finally put in place on December 22 to help pedestrians cross the road safely.

Andrew Brown, who works for Unum, was one of those to complain to the council about the lack of a crossing.

He was initially told that one would be installed by November 27, but he got in touch with The Gazette after this failed to happen.

Andrew, 35, said: “I’m still disappointed that the council didn’t think of pedestrians in the first place. Really a crossing should have been in place before the work started, and I shouldn’t have had to chase and chase for this to happen.

“However, by publically highlighting this issue in The Gazette, the council has eventually taken my concerns seriously and decided to do something about it. I’m pleased that this has happened, and that those of us who walk to work don’t have to fear for our lives any longer when crossing the road, dodging the traffic.”
