Good on Margie Doherty a Basingstoke resident running with the torch this will be her most monumental day of days. So out of 160 thousand estimated residents of basingstoke and deane is no one else from basingstoke worthy of running with the torch ?. There are 6 runners and only one basingstoke citizen. What an insult to the many people who give there time/lives unselfishly to help the community, what an insult to the local residents who strive to make a difference on behalf of the community.

Nice... should of looked it up before commenting.

1. Basingstoke has a population of 100,000 the 60,000 are their own towns and villages/hamlets.

2. Other Basingstoke residents are running but in other locations.

There are three basingstoke residents running with the torch thorough the country. Margie Doherty, Colin Godfery, Danielle Harrison, Ok i stand corrected and good on to all of them. But shouldn't the local run be about the community not someone from Ellensburg or outside the county. This is a day for our community to have pride in itself and its residents achievements. I also said this was basingstoke and deane population of estimated 160k insinuating that the torch would be within 1 hours travel of the local population as stated by the relay.

I passed down the route the torch be running yesterday and there was no signs of the grass verges or area being tidied up ready for this Historic event, correct me if am wrong maybe the council have sorted now but if not surely you would want the place looking sparkly clean!!!

chrisucdj says...'But shouldn't the local run be about the community not someone from Ellensburg or outside the county.' Why? The Olympics are about individuals from all over the world coming together to compete. Surely the torch relay should be just as inclusive to keep to the spirit of the games. Isn't it enough that the torch came to Basingstoke?
What I do object to though is torch bearers being selected by the large corporate sponsors.
