A HAMPSHIRE police officer was sacked for posting a racist comment on a social networking website, it has been revealed.

The officer was among more than 150 around the country who faced disciplinary action between 2008 to 2010 after posting inappropriate photos or comments on Facebook. Seven of the officers quit.

Hampshire Constabulary said one of its officers was dismissed without notice in 2009 for posting a racist comment on Facebook. No other details were given. The figures, from 41 of the 43 forces in England and Wales, were released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) said that while the police service recognises the widespread benefits of social networking sites, it “also understands the risks relating to compromise, operational effectiveness and reputational damage.”
