THREE student hairdressers have made it through to the final of a charity competition to find the graduate of the year.

Students from Basingstoke College of Technology (BCOT) presented models to a panel of judges, and explained the look they had created following the theme of ‘New Rebel.’ The girls aged between 17 and 21 had to cut and style their chosen model’s hair and dress her to suit the style.

The three winners of the Schwarzkopf Graduate Competition, in association with the HABB (Hair and Beauty Benevolent) charity, will now compete against other finalists from colleges in the south to be in with the chance of winning a place on the HABB Scholarship and to take part in a professional photo shoot.

Former Southern Hairdresser of the Year Rae Palmer judged the entries with Nicola Shannon, editor of Professional Hairdresser magazine, and Lois Aspinall, marketing manager for Schwarzkopf – choosing the winners based on their presentation skills and individuality.

Rae said: “The students were brilliant and the standards were very high. I thought all the students had researched the ‘New Rebel’ look extremely well and their passion and enthusiasm was truly inspiring.”

Only three could make it through to the final, where Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson will perform.

Jade Poynter, 17, from Woodlands, Overton, was one of the lucky trio. She said: “It’s amazing. I’m really shocked. To put this on my CV is great and it’s a real confidence boost. There are so many talented people here but I will work hard to prove to people I can do it.”

Katie-Jo Stokes-Barnett, 19, from North Warnborough, and Elaine Cocks, 19, from Basingstoke, scooped the other two places in the final.

Sue Scott, programme manager at BCOT, said she was proud of all the students who entered, and added: “It took them out of their comfort zone and into a scary situation but it’s an inspiration for them.”

The final will be held at Portsmouth Guildhall on June 21. Tickets for the event can be bought from portsmouthguildhall.co.uk or by calling 023 9282 4355.
