THE FORMAL identification of human remains found in Old Basing woodland could take several weeks, police said.
Skeletal remains of a woman were found by a member of the public near to the Basingstoke Canal Heritage Footpath at 2.30pm on Wednesday, February 13.
A post-mortem, which took place on Friday, February 15, confirmed that the bones were human and from a female body. Officers contacted the family of a woman, who has been missing for a long time, following the discovery.
Today, Vicky O’Hare, corporate communications officer at Hampshire Constabulary, said: “The formal identification has to be carried out by DNA testing which could take several weeks.”
She confirmed that the family are from the Basingstoke area.
Officers previously confirmed that the woman’s death is not being treated as suspicious, but inquiries are continuing to determine who she is and how she died.
The site, less than 200 metres from BMI The Hampshire Clinic, has since reopened to the public.
