CANDLES were lit by people remembering loved ones at an emotional service which also raised money for a north Hampshire charity.

Naomi House held its annual Light Up Life service on December 13, raising just under £900 in much-needed funds.

The service, held in St Mary's Church, Old Basing, gave attendees the chance to light a candle and remember a loved one. It also featured musical performances by local schools and a performance from the Basing singers.

The money was raised from donations.

Natalie Hargreaves, community fundraising co-ordinator for the charity, said: “We were delighted to welcome so many people to the service, and are so grateful to all those who took part and helped make the service so special.

“The funds raised will be so important to all the families we support.”

Naomi House and jacksplace hospices are based, in Sutton Scotney, and provide care for life-limited children and young people.

And lost loved ones were also remembered as Southern Co-operative held a Christmas tree blessing at its Basingstoke funeral home.

Clients from the past year were invited to attend and to place personal message cards on the tree at the Buckland Parade premises.

The blessing was led by celebrant Derek Craze, who said: “Occasions which help us to remember, especially if in the company of those who also have suffered a loss, can ease those feelings of sadness and help us to once again recall cherished memories of a life.”

The Christmas tree will remain within the reception area of the funeral home until the end of the festive season so that friends and family can visit to read the messages and add further ones.
