A BASINGSTOKE museum welcomed a very special guest to help launch a truly magical event.

Legendary magician Paul Daniels popped in to Milestones Museum, at Basingstoke Leisure Park, where he was photographed in the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, to celebrate the launch of the museum’s exhibition Magic.

Paul, who lives in neighbouring Berkshire, lent the exhibition, which launched last Tuesday, two of his large touring props as well as a number of costumes and trophies for display.

All visitors to the event will be able to view the iconic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, which arrived at the museum on November 1 having been loaned to the museum by its current owner Gregor Gee.

Other props from magical films also feature as part of the event, with original costumes from the Hollywood blockbuster Hook being put on display.

The exhibition is all part of a three-month spectacular which will celebrate magic and wizardry, and feature live magical performances, optical illusions and magic workshops.

Councillor Keith Chapman, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for culture and recreation, said the exhibition, which will run until Sunday, January 6, is a fantastic idea.

He added: “The Magic at Milestones event is a great opportunity for children to enjoy the secrets of magic and pick up a few tricks of their own.”
