ARTISTS helped young songwriters at Dove House School Academy get their imagination flowing during an activity day.

The students enjoyed a lyric-writing session with songwriter Jim Chorley and textile artist Lorna Jones from the SoCo Music Hub in Eastleigh as part of the Anvil Arts Education and Community Programme.

Jim and Lorna explored how to create a stream of consciousness with 22 young people, all with varying learning disabilities, over the course of three 90-minute workshop sessions.

The children were equipped with materials to make a collage and create a story, transforming their ideas into lyrics and singing them, with the help of performing arts teacher, Bethan Snaith, to the group.

Bethan said: “The workshops were fun and enjoyable for all, and provided a new and interesting way of getting pupils to write their own lyrics, even those with lesser literacy skills.”

Flis Pitman, community development assistant manager, added: “The young people at Dove House are creative and eager to progress and display their talents. Their teachers and families know just how valuable these skills can be.”
