AROUND 70 pupils from infant and junior schools in Basingstoke visited a secondary school to take part in a conference on eco schools.

The pupils, from eight schools, attended Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Wessex Close, for the Student Council Cluster Conference last Thursday.

The event was run by Cranbourne’s Young Chamber team and it saw pupils take part in three workshops.

Activities they could take part in during the day included finding out how much energy is in different types of crisps, learning about how important healthy eating and fitness is in PE, and sessions on the water cycle in geography.

A popular session which took place on the day was an activity where children created a musical rap or percussion accompaniment on the theme of eco schools.

Assistant headteacher at Cranbourne, Sarah Conlon told The Gazette: “The schools thoroughly enjoyed the day and they keep coming back.

“We chose it (the theme) because we are trying to be an eco school and it seemed to be relevant after the fair trade event went well last year.”

Nine-year-old Annabel Poynter, a Year 5 pupil at Oakley Junior School, added: “I don’t usually like science but it has been really fun. We have also made a rap about being eco friendly.”
