A FATHER has expressed his anger after claiming he was “humiliated” by a member of staff in a Basingstoke store who ordered him to get out of the shop.

Philipe Andre visited JD Sports in Festival Place and found a sports top for his 14-year-old son costing £8, reduced from £15.

The 50-year-old from Chineham took the item to the tills, and the cashier put the it through and it came up as £15.

Mr Andre, who is a full time carer for his autistic son, pointed out the error, but the cashier said the £8 tag must have been put on the top by mistake.

The father-of-seven asked to speak to a manager as he believed the shop should honour the price tag on the top. But when a manager appeared, Mr Andre claims he was very rude.

He told The Gazette: “He was mumbling. I asked for his details to complain to head office and asked for his name but he refused to give it to me. You just don’t do that.”

Mr Andre, a grandfather-of-three, asked if he could photograph the top as evidence, and the cashier said that was fine, and he also took a photo of the manager, because he had refused to identify himself.

But as he did so, Mr Andre said the manager shouted at him to get out of the shop and not to come back.

He said: “I was quite shocked. I’m a respectful and polite guy and that’s not the sort of thing you should do.”

Mr Andre made a complaint to head office, and was offered an apology and the chance to buy the top for £8. A member of staff in the customer care team at JD Sports said the matter is being investigated, and said Mr Andre is welcome to return as a customer. Since the Gazette got involved in the row he said the store had offered him vouchers, but Mr Andre says he wants an apology from the manager who upset him during the incident on May 7.

Mr Andre added: “The biggest thing is the humiliation. And I don’t want other people to go through that. They were happy to give me the difference but that’s not the point. I’m not bothered about that, it’s the way they made me feel.”

The email from JD Sports said: “We train our staff to a very high standard in customer service and I’m disappointed you did not experience this. Please be assured that the details of your complaint have been taken seriously and are currently being investigated.

“I have passed full details in regards to this over to the area manager. Any appropriate disciplinary action will be undertaken accordingly.”

JD Sports did not provide a comment when asked for one by The Gazette.
