AN INQUIRY has been launched by the Commons' women and equalities committee into sexual harassment and sexual violence in school.
Chaired by Basingstoke MP Maria Miller, the committee of MPs will begin the inquiry after a report revealed many incidents go unreported and are not taken seriously by teachers due to the age of the pupils.
In a research commissioned by the committee, pupils aged 16 to 25 from 300 schools and colleges were talked to in order to establish the impact sexual harassment and violence has within various institutions.
In 2015, a BBC investigations shows 5,500 offences were recorded in the UK across a three-year period - including 600 rapes.
Talking to The Guardian, Mrs Miller said: "It's clear from the young people we've heard from that sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools is having a profound impact on their day-to-day lives.
"We need to address this issue now, and stop it from blighting the lives of another generation of young people - both male and female."
