FIREFIGHTERS are calling on the help of the community as they prepare to drag a truck through the streets of Silchester and Tadley.

The crew at Tadley fire station is appealing for volunteers to help take part in the endurance challenge to pull their fire engine to raise money for charity.

The mission will be in support of the Fire Fighters Charity.

But the crew at Tadley fire station need strong volunteers from the local community or from businesses in the town or from the Basingstoke area to help complete the two-mile journey.

At least 40 people are needed and anyone offering their help will be asked to raise at least £50 before the event on May 9.

Dubbed the Fire Pull, it will take crews of 10 to complete the relay by travelling half a mile each.

Crew manager Gary Blackman said: “We decided at the beginning of the year to a challenge for the year which would benefit the Fire Fighters Charity.

“We were inspired by Biggleswade fire station’s pull last year and set ourselves the same challenge. Tadley fire station has enjoyed a close relationship with the community and as such we wanted to engage with people and employers to invite them to take part and work alongside their local fire crew.”

He added: “So far we've had a good response but we'd like to see more people involved. Come and join us, along with fire officers from across the county for this challenging but fun event.”

The pull will start at the Calleva Arms in Silchester before moving on to Silchester Garage, the Pelican Pub, and The Broomsquire Hotel before finishing at Sainsbury’s in Mulfords Hill, Tadley.

Those taking part are asked to meet at Tadley fire station between 11am and 11.30am for a safety meeting before starting the pull at 12.30pm.
