BOFFINS from AWE put students to the test earlier this month at the annual AWE A-level Science Challenge.
Students from eight colleges and schools across the south took part in the challenge held at Tadley Community Centre, in Newchurch Road, on October 15 as part of AWE’s “AWEsome Education” campaign.
The campaign is aimed at encouraging the study of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in education which could lead to future careers.
The day began with a talk from chief scientist at AWE, Andrew Randewich, who spoke about the exciting scientific developments around the world.
Pupils had to tackle a variety of problems including determining unknown compounds through test reactions and a laser challenge which saw students identify the sugar content in soft drinks.
AWE graduate, Dr Steve Wilcock said: “The day has really stretched the students. It is very much about bringing STEM to life and getting the students involved in practical activities to enthuse them to continue with their STEM studies.
“We hope that they feel inspired by this day.”
Following the day of demanding challenges, Newbury-based St Bartholomew’s School, clinched first place, winning £500 for the school.
