A MAN who killed himself with a cocktail of prescription drugs was concerned about being evicted from his flat, an inquest heard.

Paul Walsh’s body was found slumped against the front door of his flat in Mary Rose Court, in Attwood Close, Kings Furlong, Basingstoke, on the night of June 2 this year.

His family had called the police to the supported accommodation block, run by Stonham Housing Association, because they were concerned for his welfare, the inquest at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court heard.

Police officers used a ladder to enter the first-floor flat via a window, and found Mr Walsh’s body inside and a suicide note nearby.

Louise Smith, police staff investigator at Basingstoke CID, told the inquest that an eviction notice had been served on Mr Walsh in 2013, after concerns that he was using and possibly dealing the former legal-high mephedrone.

She said: “From all angles, it certainly looked like he decided to take his own life. I think (the eviction issue) was a big part of his problems because he did not know what he was going to do. He also went to see a solicitor and mentioned he was suicidal and this was relayed to Mary Rose Court.

“A support worker went to see him to see how he was feeling, but he did not open up.”

A post-mortem found that Mr Walsh, 45, had taken a cocktail of three prescription drugs, one of which was the heroin substitute methadone.

Andrew Bradley, coroner for North East Hampshire, recorded a verdict of suicide.
