THERE was a celebration event in a garden where youngsters have been getting their fingers dirty.

A group of 14-year-olds helped to plant raised beds and paint a new graffiti wall in the garden at Community House, in Branton Close, South Ham, which is owned by housing association Sovereign Kingfisher.

Last November, school pupils took part in National Takeover Day when they found out what bosses at Sovereign do on a daily basis.

As part of their week, they were given a £1,000 budget for a new project, and decided on refurbishing the community garden.

A celebratory event was held in the garden to mark the end of the work, with more than 100 South Ham residents attending.

Basingstoke street dancers Fatboyz entertained the crowd with an eye-catching performance.

Gordon Holdcroft, chairman of Sovereign Kingfisher, unveiled a plaque in the garden and said: “The great thing about this is that it has been a real team effort.”

South Ham residents interested in helping look after the garden should contact Barbara Dunn, resident involvement officer, on 01256 302364.
