THE MAIN route through Basingstoke town centre was closed last night after security staff spotted a woman on the edge of a multi-storey car park.

Officers were called to Churchill Way at 9.50pm. They closed the road in both directions from the Victory roundabout to the Eastrop roundabout to coax the woman down safely from the car park that spans the road.

A police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 9.50pm by security staff from Festival Place. They had seen a woman on top of the building and were obviously concerned about her welfare.

“Officers talked her back down and took her home.

“She must have been in distress to get up there in the first place but she was very calm and said she did not intend to do anything.”

The road reopened just before 10.30pm.
